Donald Trump is under fire after failing to condemn white supremacist violence in his first presidential debate with Joe Biden in Cleveland, Ohio, instead only telling far-right group the Proud Boys to “stand back and stand by” when invited to denounce them by moderator Chris Wallace.

The debate was overall an ugly and chaotic affair, with Biden attacking the president over his response to the coronavirus pandemic, responding with dignity to personal smears against his family but ultimately losing his cool with the president’s near-constant interruptions.

Analysing the contest afterwards, CNN pundit Jake Tapper said: "That was a hot mess. Inside a dumpster fire. Inside a train wreck.”
