TV guide for Singapore in June: 13 Reasons Why S4, Pennyworth, I May Destroy You, My Unfamiliar Family and more

My Unfamiliar Family (Viu)

Every month, we’ll tell you about new comedies and dramas to hit terrestrial and cable channels, as well as streaming sites in Singapore. We’ll also highlight the television shows that you’ve got to be home (or on your phone) to catch every month.

Overview of June's shows

If you haven't finished binge-watching all those Korean dramas last month, you can take a breather now as more kid-friendly content like Lego DC Super Hero Girls Brain Drain and Shaun The Sheep hit the screens. But for more mature audiences, 13 Reasons Why’s final season and I May Destroy You arrive to give us some food for thought. But if you really need to satiate that Korean drama addiction of yours, My Unfamiliar Family will give you the fix you need.

My Unfamiliar Family (2 Jun)
Viu

A family drama that, ironically, focuses on what it is like when nobody knows about you in a family and you're living with housemates. It features a typical family with some typical relationships, both romantic and platonic... as well as some atypical relationships. But when secrets start to unravel, this family must learn to deal with the consequences and what it means to be a family. Stars Han Ye-ri, Choo Ja-hyun, and Kim Ji-seok.

You can already smell the ending a mile away — the family will learn to cherish and love each other more, and it'll be a saccharinely sweet conclusion as they take a family portrait or partake in some sort of family feast. Nevertheless, it is a timely show for this period of time, especially when family members are forced to stay together during lockdown and some habits (or secrets) have been revealed as a result. There's probably a romance inside as well, but don't expect anything too novel with this series.

13 Reasons Why (Season 4) (5 Jun)
Netflix

The final season of 13 Reasons Why sees the class of Liberty High School in their last year of school — but not before they resolve the issues that plague them and finally deal with the secrets that haunted them all this while. Whether or not they make it to graduation will depend on the choices they make, and the choices they don't.

Considering the original premise of the drama, it's amazing how 13 Reasons Why has managed to make it to four seasons and shifted the format of the first season to accommodate bigger and broader issues. While the second and third seasons haven't quite had the oomph of the first season (possibly to lengthen some storylines), this is the season where it all comes to a head. Let's hope it closes with a bang — and ends with a ray of hope amidst all its dark themes.

Lego DC Super Hero Girls Brain Drain (movie) (6 Jun, Saturday 5pm)
Boomerang (StarHub TV Ch 317, and Singtel TV Ch 228)

Amnesia, bad behaviour, and stolen diamonds — who could be behind this plot that seemingly has the heroines of the series being mind controlled without their knowledge? It turns out that it's more than just a case of academic misdemeanour, as they slowly discover that the villain behind it all is intent on some world threatening havoc. Can the DC Super Hero Girls save the day, or will they succumb to an unwanted brain drain?

It's amazing how the Lego DC Super Hero Girls already have a movie of their own, despite being a short-form series. Thankfully, being a child-oriented series, it doesn't take the dark turn with amnesia that you might expect — but it does showcase one of DC's more unique super villains as the mastermind behind the whole plot. With some tongue-in-cheek humour for older viewers, this seems to be a film for all ages.

I May Destroy You (8 Jun, Mondays 10.30am)
HBO (Starhub Ch 601, Singtel Ch 420)

A fearless, frank and provocative half-hour series exploring the question of sexual consent and where, in the new landscape of dating and relationships, the distinction between liberation and exploitation lies. Set in London, where gratification is only an app away, the story centers on Arabella (Coel), a carefree, self-assured Londoner with a group of great friends, a boyfriend in Italy, and a burgeoning writing career. But when her drink is spiked with a date-rape drug, she must question and rebuild every element of her life.

How does one deal with trauma — especially when one can only remember bits and pieces of it? What does it mean to heal in a world where yoga Instagrammers and everything handmade is dubbed "artisanal"? Where does one draw the line when it comes to love and lust? I May Destroy You sounds like an intriguing series that explores all these uncomfortable issues, which are more relevant than ever to our generation. It's probably going to have an uncomfortable ending, but that's just like life, isn't it?

Pennyworth (29 Jun, Mondays 9pm)
Warner TV (Starhub TV: 515, Singtel TV: 306)

Everyone knows Batman and his backstory (darkness, no parents) — but we've only gotten hints of the backstory of his trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth. In this series, we finally get to see just Alfred Pennyworth came to be, why he's a worthy butler for the Dark Knight, and how this former special forces soldier came to be a humble butler in a millionaire's mansion.

After the the gaping Batman hole that the ending of Gotham left in us (Batwoman doesn't quite fill that void, even if they have shown Bruce Wayne), it looks like Pennyworth will be the series to satiate Bat-fans around the world. Anyway, we've heard so much about Alfred's storied past, so this is finally a payoff for all those tales we've been told. It's time for us to see how much of a badass Alfred is.
