Two arrested for sending threatening letters to PM Lee, DPM Tharman and others

Two suspects aged 18 and 53 have been arrested for their suspected involvement in sending threatening letters and hell notes to certain individuals, including Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and DPM Tharman Shanmugaratnam, said the Singapore Police Force.

Between 27 April and 4 May this year, police reports were made when several individuals, including political office holders, received letters and hell money in relation to the closure of the Sungei Road flea market.

The suspects were identified and arrested on 4 May, said the police. Several handwritten letters, mobile phones, envelopes, hell notes and a laptop computer were seized. Investigations are still in progress.

The letters were signed off by “Koh Eng Khoon”. Koh Eng Khoon is the name of the chairman of the Association for the Recycling of Second Hand Goods at the Sungei Road market. According to The Straits Times, Koh’s home was raided by the police at midnight on 27 April. Koh said his home was searched and his phone confiscated. He also denied involvement in sending the letters.

The case has been classified as criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication. If convicted, the arrested duo face up to two years’ jail and a fine.
