SINGAPORE — Construction for five train stations along the Jurong Region line (JRL) - the seventh Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line in Singapore - will begin next year, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Tuesday (10 September).

Two contracts worth $739.5 million were awarded for the work, which is slated for completion in 2026, said the authority in a press release.

Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore) was awarded the $465.2 million contract to design and construct three JRL stations - Choa Chu Kang, Choa Chu Kang West and Tengah - with a 4.3-km viaduct.

Local construction companies Eng Lee Engineering and Wai Fong Construction was awarded the $274.3 million contract to design and construct two JRL stations - Hong Kah and Corporation - with a 3.4-km viaduct.

On the three companies, LTA noted that they have “established track records”.

Shanghai Tunnel Engineering (Singapore), for instance, has an established track record of railway infrastructure projects, including the Circle Line, Downtown Line and Tuas West Extension, said the LTA, adding that it is also involved in the ongoing construction of some Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL) stations.

Separately, Wai Fong Construction is involved in the ongoing construction of the North-South Corridor between Victoria Street and Kampong Java Road, as well as the TEL Tanjong Rhu station and tunnels, added the authority.

The 24km JRL, to open in three stages starting from 2026, will have 24 stations, including three interchange stations at Boon Lay, Choa Chu Kang and Jurong East.

The line will be an elevated line serving “both existing and future developments in the western part of Singapore”, said the LTA, adding that it is expected to serve 200,000 daily commuters in the initial years.

“This is forecast to grow to more than 500,000 daily commuters in the longer term, once future developments in the area are realised,” the authority added.
