Two men charged for bak kut teh restaurant brawl
Two men who caused an early morning ruckus at a popular bak kut teh restaurant along Balestier Road in August this year were charged in the State Courts on Monday (5 December).
Tay Soo Yong, 50, and Toh Kian Teck, 63, each face one charge of using threatening behaviour to cause alarm to one Cheng Weihui by the throwing plastic chopsticks at him.
Toh faces an additional charge of committing mischief by causing property damage amounting to $2,106, after he threw a plastic chair against a display shelf, flipped a table, kicked three chairs and pushed a steamer to the floor, causing the glass to shatter.
The incident occured at Balestier Bak Kut Teh (Kian Lian 365) at around 2.37am on 19 August. It was caught on camera and shared widely online.
In the video posted by Balestier Bak Kut Teh, Toh, Tay and two other men were seen starting a ruckus after the menu and utensils were laid on the table. The restaurant owners claimed that the men, who appeared to be drunk, had caused at least $5,000 in damage.
Tay, who was dressed in a blue polo tee, told the court that he intends to plead guilty. His hearing has been set for 27 December.
Toh, who was in a white polo tee, said that he wishes to apply for legal aid for the purposes of mitigation. He will be back in court on 12 December.
If convicted for causing alarm, both men can be jailed up to six years and/or fined up to $5,000. If convicted for causing mischief resulting in a loss of $500 or more, Toh may be jailed up to two years, and/or fined.
