Two of four new COVID cases in Singapore are in community

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Wednesday (9 June) confirmed four new COVID-19 cases in Singapore, bringing the country's total case count to 62,223.

Of them, two are local cases in the community, with one linked to previous cases already placed on quarantine earlier. Wednesday marks the 45th consecutive day with local cases reported.

The remaining two cases are imported – one is Singaporean and the other is a permanent resident who returned from India and Iraq.

"Amongst the new cases today, two are asymptomatic, and were detected from our proactive screening and surveillance, while two were symptomatic," said the MOH.

The unlinked case in the community is a 29-year-old Burmese man who works as a repair worker at Grandwork Interior. He had received his first dose of COVID-19 on 31 May.

The other community case is the 13th infection linked to the NTUC Foodfare (308 Anchorvale Road) cluster. He is a 21-year-old Malaysian man who works as a kitchen assistant at Rice Garden at 308 Anchorvale Road. As he was identified as a workplace contact of a chef at Rice Garden, he was placed on quarantine on 29 May.

The ministry noted that the number of new cases in the community has decreased from 126 in the week before to 71 in the past week. The number of unlinked cases in the community has also decreased from 26 in the week before to six in the past week.

Singapore has 46 active COVID-19 clusters.

99% of total cases have recovered, 1 in ICU

With 38 more patients discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities on Wednesday, 61,740 cases – or 99.2 per cent of the total – have fully recovered from the infection.

Most of the 158 hospitalised cases are stable or improving, while one of them are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

A total of 291 patients – with mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive – are isolated and cared for at community facilities.

Apart from the 34 patients who have died from COVID-19 complications, 15 others who tested positive for the virus were determined to have died from unrelated causes, including three whose deaths were attributed to a heart attack and another four, whose deaths were attributed to coronary heart disease.

Among the 123 confirmed cases reported from 3 to 9 June, 72 cases have tested positive for their serology tests, 42 have tested negative, and nine serology test results are pending.

In a national televised address last Monday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the government should be able to ease COVID-19 safe management restrictions after 13 June if the pandemic situation continues to improve and the number of community cases falls further.
