Two potential exit routes come crashing down as Tottenham man forced to stay and fight
Eric Dier was reportedly offered to Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth among other sides, but as nobody wanted him, he’s set to stay put at Tottenham.
Dier is yet to feature for Spurs this season. While he played 33 Premier League games last season, the multiple managers that took charge of games in that campaign tended to favour five-at-the-back formations.
New boss Ange Postecoglou has opted for a flat back four, with Cristian Romero and new signing Micky van de Ven in the centre. What’s more, Dier was part of a woeful defence last season; Tottenham conceded 63 league goals, the sixth-most in the league.
As such, Postecoglou has been open to the idea of shipping him out, not just because he was part of a poor defence last season, but that he has just a year left on his contract means now is the last chance to make money out of him.
While reports suggested a few sides were interested in him – such as Fulham, which could have seen Spurs gain the services of Tosin Adarabioyo – nothing has come to fruition. In fact, it’s been reported multiple sides turned Dier down.
That’s according to The Athletic, who report chairman Daniel Levy had been ‘hoping to move the defender on’ and as such offered him to Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest among others, but ‘no deal that suited Dier and Spurs materialised’.
The Cherries rejected an approach of £20million from Spurs for Lloyd Kelly – Dier was likely mentioned in those negotiations. The north London outfit have since ‘called time’ on a move for Kelly for good, as per the Evening Standard.
Meanwhile, Tottenham have come to an agreement with Forest over a move for Johnson, with a £47.5million move soon to come. Forest again likely rejected Dier as part of that deal, preferring to just have the cash sum instead.
With Spurs unable to find a home for their unwanted player, he’ll likely have to stay put. Having not played a game so far this season, he may remain resigned to the bench, attempting to fight for a place.
That is unless a side comes in with a late offer for him, but given to this point interest has been thin, or at least nothing has materialised beyond it being mentioned as interest, a move seems unlikely.
