SINGAPORE — Two toddlers were rescued, while 60 residents were evacuated amid a fire in a Marsiling Crescent HDB unit on Wednesday evening (22 June).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post on Thursday that it had responded to a fire in a bedroom on the second-floor unit at Block 218, Marsiling Crescent, at about 10.40pm on Wednesday.

Upon arrival, firefighters from Woodlands Fire Station found a raging fire, with thick black smoke emitting from the unit. They donned breathing apparatus sets and extinguished the fire with a water jet.

"Two police officers... rescued two toddlers who were found conscious in the living room of the affected unit prior to SCDF’s arrival," SCDF said in its Facebook post.

"The two toddlers were conveyed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital by two SCDF ambulances."

About 60 people from neighbouring units were evacuated by the police, as a precautionary measure.

SCDF to commend member of public who tried to save toddlers

As a result of the fire, the entire unit was affected by heat and smoke damage.

SCDF said that it understands that a member of the public had tried to force open the door of the affected unit to rescue the two toddlers after the fire had started.

It will be reaching out to the person to commend him for his quick-thinking and prompt action in attempting to rescue the toddlers.

The cause of fire is under investigation.
