Two UMS students killed when car crashes into tree

KOTA KINABALU: Two University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students were killed when the car they were travelling in slammed into a tree, early th¬is morning.

Mohd Haidil Amr¬an, 23, from Kunak, and Nur Azlina Tan Lian Chew, 22, from Tawau, were on their way back to campus af¬ter a night out when the accident occurred at 2.41am.

District acting police chief Super¬intendent George Abd Rakman said Mohd Haidil, who was behind the wheel, lost control of the car, which skidded and hit a tree at Jalan Tun Fuad Step¬hen.

"The two were heading back to campus when Mohd Haidil lost control of the car after overtaking another ve¬hicle. The car rammed into a tree on a road island.

“Nur Azlina was in the front passenger seat. Both victims were trapped inside the wreckage. It took about an ho¬ur for the Fire and Rescue personnel to extract both victims, who were pronounced dead at the scene," said George.

He said the bodies were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospi¬tal for post-mortems, and added that the case is being investigat¬ed under Section 41 (1) of the Road Tran¬sport Act 1987.
