KOTA KINABALU: An Uber driver and another man were arrested for possessing 101.10 grams of syabu at a shopping mall here, on Monday.
The duo, aged 31 and 24, were nabbed after police tracked them down to a car park at the City Mall shopping centre about 2pm, following a tip-off off on drug activities taking place at the mall.
District police chief Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra said the men tried to flee from their car when police approached the vehicle.
“One of them threw away a black plastic bag as they tried to escape but they were apprehended soon after,” he said.
Checks later showed that the plastic bag contained crystal-like substances, believed to be ‘syabu.’
Chandra said the drugs had a street value of RM8,000. If packaged for distribution, it could produce up to five thousand smaller packets.
“Once repacked, the drugs can be sold at between RM10 to RM20 depending on the location,” he said.
Both men tested positive for drugs and have been remanded for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.
