UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira to face Dustin Poirier on Dec. 11

After dispatching Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier is getting another title shot.

UFC lightweight champion Charles Oliveira will defend his belt against Poirier, a former interim champion at UFC 269 on Dec. 11, according to ESPN. Poirier seemingly confirmed the news with a cryptic tweet.

This will be Oliveira's first title defense since he defeated former Bellator champion Michael Chandler for the belt, which had been vacated by Khabib Nurmagomedov's abrupt retirement. The 31-year-old Oliveira, who has been with the promotion since 2010, holds a 31-8 record and the UFC record for most finishes with 17.

Poirier got this far via a rematch, then trilogy bout against McGregor. Poirier defeated the loud Irishman via early TKO in both bouts, the latter in surreal fashion after McGregor's leg seemingly broke mid-step.

Another longtime UFC fighter, Poirier has enjoyed a career renaissance over the last few years. He earned a shot at an interim lightweight belt in 2019 and made the most of it with a win over then-featherweight champion Max Holloway, but fell to Nurmagomedov, as many other top lightweights have done, in the subsequent unification bout.

Poirier rebounded with a win over Dan Hooker, then took on McGregor twice. The latter match was a de facto elimination bout for the first shot at Oliveira, and Poirier more than delivered. We'll see how the 32-year-old does in his next go-around.

UFC 269 is stacked

The addition of a Poirier-Oliveira bout gives the UFC a third championship bout at UFC 269.

The UFC has already announced that dual champion Amanda Nunes will defend her bantamweight title against Julianna Pena in a bout initially scheduled for UFC 265 on Aug. 7, but rescheduled after Nunes contracted COVID-19.

Flyweight champion Brandon Moreno will also face former champ Deiveson Figueiredo in a trilogy bout. Moreno twice challenged Figueiredo for the title, the first bout resulting in a majority draw and the second in a third-round submission win for the UFC's first Mexican-born champion. Now, Figueiredo gets the first shot at Moreno.

Also on the card are bouts involving former champs Cody Garbrandt (facing Kai Kara-France) and Dominick Cruz (facing Pedro Munhoz) and rising star Sean O'Malley (facing Raulian Paiva).
