PEKAN: Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) will hold the 1st International UMP Eco Ride 2017 here, this Sunday, to promote its Healthy Lifestyle campaign and Visit Pahang Year 2017.
Over 500 participants in two categories – the 30km Fun Ride and the 120km Race – will cycle from UMP Pekan through several villages here, including Sungai Soi, Cherok Paloh, Lamir Ganchong, Kampung Maulana and Kampung Marhum, before finishing at the campus grounds.
Eco Ride 2017 deputy chairman Prof Dr Hamzah Ahmad said entrants will qualify for one of the two categories based on age and health, and level of cycling mastery (professional, amateur or casual).
The 120km Race is divided into a further four sub-categories, which are: Men Master (age 35 and above), Men Open (below age 35), MTB Open and Women Open.
Participants are also eligible to take part in a lucky draw, with exciting prizes to be won, including an Arabian Bay Resort holiday package, televisions, bicycles, bicycle-related products and hampers, among others.
Members of the public are also invited to attend the Eco Fit Carnival, with a range of dazzling events lined-up, including Fitness Talk, Senamrobik and Eco Walk, at UMP Pekan on the same day.
UMP vice-chancellor, Prof Datuk Dr Daing Nasir Ibrahim, said the event will be a memorable one for participants, who will cycle through beautiful natural surroundings while testing their physical endurance.
He said that the environment-themed programme could boost Malaysia's tourism sector by attracting visitors from outside the country.
"The programme is also part of efforts to improve the wellbeing of (UMP) campus residents, and promote the communitisation of technology by roping in nearby communities (into the multi-faceted project)," he said in a statement today.
