SETIU: A lakeside picnic for five friends turned tragic when one of them drowned while swimming in the Kerung recreational park’s lake in Pelong here, yesterday evening.

The victim, Abdul Mu'min Che Noor, 23, from Kampung Bechah, Tendong, Pasir Mas in Kelantan, was on the outing with four other Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) students, aged 21, 22 and 27.

Acting district police chief Assistant Superintendent Burhanuddin Mustafa said, after arriving at the park at 4.30pm, Mu’min – a third year student at UMT – jumped into the lake for a swim, but went missing several minutes later.

He added that the Kerung lake is about 12 feet deep.

Burhanuddin said the victim's friends alerted nearby villagers to the incident and asked for assistance.

"The victim was found by a recreation park worker, minutes later. However, it was too late", Burhanuddin said today.

He said a report on the incident was lodged at the Sungai Tong police station the same day, and the case is being classified as sudden death.

Burhanuddin said Mu'min's body was sent to the Setiu Hospital for a post mortem.
