KUALA LUMPUR: Union Network-International – Malaysia Labour Centre (UNI-MLC) strongly supports Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s call for employers to prioritise the local workforce over foreign manpower.

Najib’s appeal is part of his initiative to realise five core areas of the Workers Transformation Leap.

UNI-MLC president Datuk Mohamed Shafie BP Mammal said that the call is timely, as the union has just begun monitoring the ratio between local workers and foreign workers.

“Some companies employ more foreign workers than locals, and even retrench local workers in order to employ foreign workers,” he said.

He added that this needs to stop, as Malaysia is forging a path towards becoming a high-income nation, and should therefore produce more high-income workers with high productivity, high values, high thinking and high skills.

“UNI-MLC encourages training for employees in line with new technology to better serve companies and the public.

“This move by the government will ensure that the well-being of Malaysian workers is safeguarded,” Shafie added.
