Australian value exchange mobile platform Unlockd announced its entry to the Indonesian market on Monday with the launch of Swapps. The expansio is the result of its partnership with XL Axiata’s youth mobile brand AXIS.

Swapps is Unlockd’s fifth market launch and its first in Asia; the startup already has a presence in the US, UK, and the Caribbean.

The product itself is an Android-based mobile app that enables users to reduce the amount they spent on mobile phones in exchange for viewing targetted ads, news content, and offers when they unlock via their smartphone.

Users will receive a mobile credit between IDR2,000 (US$0.14) and IDR8,000 (US$0.59), which the company said will be able to lower the “typical” monthly spend by up to 32 per cent.

XL Axiata is a subsidiary to Axiata Group (the digital services arm Axiata Digital led a Series B funding round for Unlockd).

While in this instance, the startup worked with the telco group to launch Swapps in Indonesia, Unlockd COO Aliza Knox explained in an email to e27 that Unlockd is open to partner with other telco companies in the country.

“While we are working with an Axiata company, we are very open to working with not only other telcos but also streaming and loyalty partners, and are in conversations with a number of them,” she said.

She also revealed some of the company’s milestones and targets.

“Since Unlockd’s first market launch almost two years ago, the company has seen rapid growth due to its unique win-win-win model, which creates value from moments spent on digital devices for partners such as telcos and streaming services as well as advertisers and consumers. We are aiming to give back US$500 million in value to mobile users by 2025, and we are already well on our way having provided tens of millions of value within the first 18 months,” she explained.

“With five live products in market for both Unlockd Connect (telcos) and Unlockd Stream (subscription content providers) within the first two years, we are excited about the roadmap for the business and our ability to achieve our vision,” she added.

In Indonesia, Swapps will be competing with Postr, Cashtree, and Excite Point. Knox said that the company welcomes competition with the brands.

“We are confident that our differentiated and patented technology, which unlike other offers does not require changing consumer habits, will prove highly successful,” she said.

She did not answered our question about the possibility of acquiring or merging with a local player in order to secure the Indonesian market.

Founded in Melbourne in 2014, Unlockd has offices in New York, London, and Singapore.

Prior to joining the startup in April, Knox was the Twitter Vice President for Asia Pacific.
