Unstoppable Shiffrin wins Super G as Vonn hits gate

American ace Mikaela Shiffrin won an 11th World Cup race of the season on Sunday, clinching a thrilling Super G ahead of Tina Weirather and Tamara Tippler. Veteran speed queen Lindsey Vonn, a 12-time winner on the Cortina slopes, failed to finish as she hit a gate whilst chasing Weirather's early pace setting time. The 34-year-old Vonn was comforted in the finish zone as rival downhill ace Sofia Goggia, one of her best friends on the circuit, gave her a bunch of flowers. Vonn has 82 World Cup wins as she hunts down Ingemar Stenmark's record of 86, but will be looking over her shoulder at her fast moving compatriot. This was the 23-year-old Shiffrin's 54th World Cup triumph, and just this season she has won five slaloms, two giant slaloms, three super-G's and a parallel giant slalom and may well beat the record of 14 wins in a single season set by Vreni Schneider in 1989. Shiffrin and Vonn have both won 12 in a single season. The 29-year-old Weirather, a super-G specialist, established an early mark of 1min 22.64sec that held until Shiffrin clipped 0.16sec to ensure she had won all three super-Gs she has entered this season.
