Although Malacañan Kamao did not get the championship title this season 5 of the UNTV Cup, the team is exceedingly grateful for being a part of the basketball league with the heart for public service.
“Maraming maraming salamat po Kuya Daniel, sa buong UNTV po for having this kind of advocacy, napakalaking bagay po,” said Kamao head coach, Louie Gonzales. (Thank you very much, Kuya Daniel, to UNTV, for having this kind of advocacy, this is a great thing for us.)
The Kamao team said they consider UNTV Cup as a life changer because aside from being able to play their favorite sport and being able to help their chosen beneficiary, UNTV Cup is also able to contribute to strengthening family ties.
”It changes lives ..especially now ..I myself , sa akin nararamdaman ko yung self confidence ko together with the players nakikita ko na yung family nila, it become a family affair eh. Tapos yung ibang dati di nila nakakausap now nakakusap nila… and its really really great, cause its playing the sports, the game you love tapos at the same time nakakapaglaro ka pa,” Gonzales said.
(It changes lives, especially now…as for myself, I feel confident, together with the players, I am able to see their families. It has become a family affair. They are able to talk with other people. It’s really really great because it’s playing the sport, the game you love, at the same time you are able to help.)
“Sobrang saya, gaya nga ng sinabi ni coach kasi nalalaro namin yung hilig namin gusto naming gawin tapos nakaktulong kami sa kapwa namin, tapos yung family namin parang involved na rin,” Kamao player Ian Garrido said. (It is so much fun. Just like what coach said, we are able to play our favorite sport at the same time we are able to help our fellowmen. Our families also get involved)
“Ito malaki impact sa amin, hindi lang yung pangalan namin sa likod ang dinadala namin , kundi itong sa harap (pointing Malacañan jersey ) kailangan maging role model kami sa lahat,” player Eric dela Cuesta said. (This has great impact on us. We are carrying not just the names on our backs, but the name here at the front. We must be role models to all.)

As for 2001 PBA rookie of the year Christian Luanzon, UNTV Cup is different from other basketball tournaments in the country.
“In terms of purpose ito talaga yung pinaka malaki… I think the difference in the collegiate and semi pro and the professional level is this one ini-re-re-represent mo yug mga taong nangangailangan and para sa akin sila talaga yung may pressure sa buhay… everyday fighting for their lives,” he said.
(In terms of the purpose, this has the greatest one. I think the difference in the collegiate and the semi-pro, and professional level, is that in this league, we represent the people who are in need. And for me, they are really the ones with pressure in life….every day fighting for their lives.)
As for Lt. Commander Paul Yamamoto of the Presidential Security Group, one of his wishes has come true upon joining the league.
“Only and the one of a kind na basketball league for a cause, so yung hilig namin sa basketball nagagawa namin , pinangarap naming maglaro sa ganitong venue natutupad at the same time nakakatuong kami sa benificiaries namin,” he said.
(This is the only one and one-of-a-kind basketball league for a cause. Here we are able to play basketball, our wish to be able to play in this kind of venue came true, at the same time we are able to help our beneficiaries.)
Kamao team won P2 million pesos given to the cancer ward of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center.
“Makikita mo na ginagamit kami ng itaas… para yung pera na makukuha namin ibibigay namin sa charity na yun. Imaginin mo kung gaano karaming bata yung matutulungan… nagpapasaamat kami kay Kuya Daniel sa chance na ibinigay nya sa amin,” Kamao player Narayan Das Javier said.
(You can see that God is using us so that we can give the cash prize to charity. Just imagine how many children will receive help. We thank Kuya Daniel for this opportunity.) – Bernard Dadis | UNTV News & Rescue
