The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) and Real Estate Developers’ Association of Singapore (REDAS) have joined forces to launch an annual competition on Tuesday (14 November) to further improve the city-state’s built environment.

Dubbed as the URA-REDAS SPARK Challenge, the inaugural contest invites the public to submit ideas, innovations and inventions, with a chance to test them in shopping malls.

The theme for the first challenge is to enhance the health and wellness of people within the built environment.

The innovations may cover various subjects conforming with the theme, like uplifting people’s moods and emotional wellness, as well as encouraging them to be more physically active.

It may also include ideas that can forge stronger bonds among community members and innovations that can create an environment conducive for relaxing and recharging.

“The competition will be held in two stages. The first stage is a call for prototype proposals that can solve the year’s theme challenge.” For the second stage, three proposals will be shortlisted and their proponent will get $5,000 so they can develop two working copies of their prototype.

These will then be installed in two out of six shopping centres owned by REDAS members for a period of about three weeks. The public will be able to interact with the prototypes and vote for their favourites. The winning prototype will then be selected based on the public’s response and judging criteria.

The top winner of the URA-REDAS SPARK Challenge will receive the grand prize of $10,000. For the complete details of the contest, please visit this link.
