Ushering in the festive season with Christmas kids shows

We were just sitting down the other day and marveling at how 2017 has flown by. We are quite certain that time passes more quickly when you have two kids.

The Christmas season is nearly upon us and we are really feeling the spirit as we walk in the malls and see all the decorations already set up. We’ve also jumped on the bandwagon and put up our decorations a week ago, with most of our tree decorations from our trusty favourite store Daiso.

When this time of the year rolls around, kids certainly get excited by all the decorations and lights going up across the island – our 22-month-old (nicknamed Kwazii) loved looking at the previous year’s Christmas lights – even before he turned a year old. This year, he’s able to excitedly name Christmas trees whenever he spots one, and even count how many he sees. With our 4.5-year-old (nicknamed Barnacles), we have tried to do our parental duty to teach him that the most important aspect of Christmas to us as Christians is the birth of Jesus. Even though it is Jesus’ birthday and not his, he gets presents because it is the season of giving. Of course, his excitement likely stems mainly from one word: Presents!

Another fun part of Christmas for the kids are the free Christmas stage shows the malls will be rolling out toward the end of November – we have made it a fun family affair to spend each weekend visiting different malls to catch the various stage performances.

Here’s our list of performances we plan to try to catch. We have categorized them by type of show/characters rather than by mall, because we will travel near and far just to catch our kids’ favorite character on stage, right?

1. The Little Big Club Christmas Carnival

This show features our kids’ latest favourite character – Mike the Knight – along with Barney, Thomas the Train and Angelina Ballerina.

Venue: ONE KM Mall
Dates: 21 Nov – 3 Dec
Mon – Fri (1pm, 6pm, no show on Wed)
Sat & Sun (12.30pm, 3.30pm, 6pm)

2. “Out of this World” Transformers Christmas

If your children are Transformers fans, City Square mall is definitely worth a visit. They will have life-size Transformers statues brought in from overseas, with the first ever ‘Live’ Transformers stage show featuring characters such as Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.

Venue: City Square Mall
Dates: 2 – 17 Dec
Tue – Fri (2pm, 7pm)
Sat & Sun (1pm, 4pm, 7pm)

3. Paw Patrol show / Meet & Greet

Ever since Barnacles found out about the upcoming Paw Patrol stage show, the famous dogs and Ryder have been coming out to play more often. Photo: Mummy and Daddy Daycare

Our 4.5-year-old loved the Paw Patrol pups for quite a long period of time. He has the entire collection of Ryder and the pups, and even though they don’t come out from the toy box as often as before, we’re quite sure the upcoming stage show will revive his interest.

Venue: United Square
Dates: 21 Nov – 4 Dec
Mon – Fri (2.30, 7pm, no show on Thurs)
Sat & Sun 2pm, 5pm, 7pm

Venue: One KM Mall
Dates: 6 – 12 Dec
Mon – Fri (1pm, 6pm, no show on Thurs)
Sat & Sun (12.30, 3.30, 6pm)

4. Peppa Pig show / Meet & Greet

During our recent visit to Southampton in the United Kingdom, the kids were enthralled by Peppa Pig Land, and even our 22-month-old (nicknamed Kwazii) can recognise the characters by sight now. We must admit, we are not fans of the Peppa Pig show as we don’t think it is the best influence on our children, but we’ll make an exception for the stage show, which they will probably enjoy.

Venue: United Square
Dates: 7 – 17 Dec
Mon – Fri (2.30, 7pm, no show on Wed)
Sat & Sun (2pm, 5pm, 7pm)

5. Care Bears, Forever Friends and Paddington

When Mummy was in primary school, Forever Friends and Care Bears were really popular, and made excellent gifts between friends. If your children love Care Bears, do head down to Suntec City North Atrium this Christmas season for live shows.

Venue: Suntec City, North Atrium

Beary Parade
Dates: 26 Nov, 3, 10 & 17 Dec, 2pm

Care Bears show
Dates: 21-26 Nov (2pm, 7pm, no Sun 2pm show)

Forever Friends show
28 Nov – 3 Dec (2pm, 7pm, no Sun 2pm show)

Paddington Show
5-10 Dec (2pm, 7pm, no Sun 2pm show)

There you have it – the “live” kids shows that will be keeping us busy (and our kids very happy) during the weeks leading up to Christmas – we will brave the crowds just for them. Happy watching!

Mummy and Daddy Daycare are the pseudonyms of a Singaporean husband and wife who are raising two young boys aged four and one, nicknamed Barnacles and Kwazii from the children’s Octonauts series. Get into the minds of this couple who describe parenthood as a lifetime adventure – you are always learning something new! Whoever said parenting was a walk in the park?
