Vet lawmakers with fake academic credentials, DAP tells Higher Education Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: A DAP lawmaker today has claimed that there are Members of Parliaments holding fake academic qualifications.

Ong Kian Ming (DAP-Serdang), without naming names, suggested that the Higher Education Ministry vet parliamentarians on their Master's and doctorate degrees (PhD).

"(There are certain) Yang Berhormat in this House who hold fake qualifications, not only PhDs but also Master's degrees," he said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Ong suggested that lawmakers with PhDs to prove that their academic qualifications were genuine, adding that it would give a good impression to the people.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Dr Mary Yap Kain Ching said she agreed with Ong and said the ministry, together with the police, would take stern action against individuals holding fake PhDs.

She urged those with evidence to report the matter to the ministry so the police could take action.

In response, Ong stood up and said: "I will provide evidence."
