JOHOR BARU: Former New Straits Times sportswriter Dan Guen Chin died at the Sultan Ismail Hospital here today at 4.41pm.

He was 64.

Dan, who was formerly NST acting Johor bureau chief, left the company to join Bernama in Singapore before joining The Malay Mail as the daily's staff correspondent.

He was recognised by the state government for his journalistic contributions in the south, with a Johor Special Media Award in 2015 presented by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Khaled, on behalf of the state government today, expressed his heartfelt condolence to Dan's wife and son, who were by his side when he breathed his last.

"Dan's death marks a big loss to the world of journalism due to his vast experience. He was a role model to his peers," Khaled said in a statement.

Dan battled cancer which had started in the pancreas and had gradually spread despite a series of chemotherapy treatments.

Having been in the field of journalism for more than three decades, Dan had been hailed as a “legend” by his peers.
