'Armed' Suspect Flees Scene by Swimming Away, Police Pull Him to Shore

A Gold Coast man has captured the moment Queensland Police used a tin dinghy in a Palm Beach canal to bring to shore an “armed” man that fled the scene of an incident on Sunday, August 28. David Rowe, of Palm Beach, said in a Facebook post that the man “jumped a bunch of our fences after disturbing one of our neighbours” and jumped into the canal in a bid to get away.

Rowe said Queensland Police “commandeered” the dinghy from three young teenagers and used a gaff hook to pull the man to shore. He told Storyful that the man was in the water for a long time, kicking the boat away when they came near, adding that the suspect threatened to drown police if they came in the water after him.

Rowe said the incident took place on Mallawa Drive. Queensland Police confirmed to Storyful that an incident took place at the location.

“I can confirm police attended an incident at Palm Beach around 10.30am on August 28, 2016 following reports from concerned members of the public of a man walking down Mallawa Drive allegedly armed with a knife,” said a police spokesperson.

“With the use of a tinny police were able to successfully detain the offender without injury to any member of the public,” she added.

A 38-year-old man from Maroochydore charged with possession of knife in a public place, trespass and assault or obstruct police officer.
