Baltimore Celebrates End of Citywide Curfew

Hundreds celebrated the end of Baltimore’s citywide curfew in front of City Hall on Sunday, May 3, dancing and banging drums to mark the occasion. Many also joined in a day of prayer at the same location. City Hall has become a focal point for protests following the death of Freddie Gray, a local man who suffered a fatal spinal-cord injury while in police custody. Six officers were charged on May 1 in connection with Gray’s death.

Governor Larry Hogan said the Maryland National Guard would draw down its presence in Baltimore on Sunday, almost one week after peaceful protests turned to riots in the city and the Guard was activated.

Demonstrators clashed with police near Mondawmin Mall on April 27, with violence spilling into the North-Penn neighborhood where vehicles and buildings, including a CVS store, were set on fire and businesses were looted.
