Baltimore Police in Riot Gear Clash With Teens at Mall

Baltimore police in riot gear clashed with teenagers at a downtown mall on Monday, April 27, after rumors of a protest put authorities on high alert. According to the Baltimore Sun, a flier was circulated on Monday calling for a high school “purge,” or protest, scheduled to kick off from Mondawmin Market to city center at 3pm eastern time.

Students gathered at Mondawmin Mall after a funeral for Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who suffered a fatal spinal cord injury while in police custody, came to a close.

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), the local Mondawmin Mall and several other institutions were shuttered at 2pm, amid concerns over violence. The incident comes two days after confrontations between police and protesters broke out outside of Orioles Park at Camden Yards during what had been otherwise peaceful demonstration.
