Blaze Rips Through Calais 'Jungle' Camp Amid Demolition

Flames ripped through the Jungle in Calais on Wednesday, October 26, the third day of a government operation to clear the makeshift refugee camp. It was unclear who started the blaze, which destroyed tents, shelters and small shops in the sprawling French camp.

Save the Children reported that hundreds of children, confused and distressed, remained at the camp as it burned. The Help Refugees charity, which shared footage of the scene with Storyful, said there were approximately 300 children sheltering under a bridge next to the camp, still waiting to be registered so that they could be taken to the United Kingdom.

The first group of minors, under age 13, were boarded onto a bus to the UK on Tuesday, as officials began demolition of the camp, Sky News reported. According to Help Refugees, registration for minors halted on Wednesday morning.

More than 4,000 people have been bused from the camp, which has been home to over 6,000 people for months, to asylum centers across France since Monday, Reuters reported. Credit: Facebook/Valerio Cataldi
