Clashes Erupt as Pakistani Authorities Move to Raze Slums

Clashes occurred on July 30 in sector 1-1/11 of Pakistan’s capital Islamabad as authorities began razing illegal slums, home to some 12,000 inhabitants, that they suspected were a base for Islamic militants. Police used tear gas and water cannon to force residents out, detaining some, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.

Pakistan’s Geo TV said the country’s Capital Development Authority (CDA) was charged with carrying out the demolitions on the order of the Islamabad High Court. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
