Counting Underway at Lagos Polling Station

Voting was extended to a second day at hundreds of polling stations due to violence and technical glitches that made it impossible for voters to cast their ballots in the presidential elections on Saturday, March 28, according to news reports. Over 20 people were reportedly killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday.

The election between incumbent Goodluck Jonathan and former military ruler Muhammadu Buhar is expected to be one of the most tightly contested in the country’s history. In February Jonathan delayed the polling date by six weeks citing the need to recapture territory from Islamist group Boko Haram in northern Nigeria as the reason.
