Crowds Await Referendum Result in Syntagma Square

Crowds gathered outside the Greek parliament in Syntagma Square on Sunday evening, July 5, to await the outcome of the referendum on the terms of new international loans to tackle the country’s debt crisis. The race between the Yes and No camp was predicted to be too close to call in the run up to the vote, but early indications on Sunday took many onlookers by surprise.

Some 60 percent of the first quarter of votes were in favour of not accepting the creditors demands, putting support behind the Syriza-led government.
