Crowds Protest in Pakistan After Government Bans Rallies, Arrests Opposition

Protesters rallied and blocked roads in several Pakistani cities on Friday, October 28, a day after police raided the youth convention of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf party and arrested dozens of activists. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s government had banned public rallies after Khan called for mass demonstrations following revelations that Sharif’s family had offshore bank accounts.

After the arrests, Khan called for protests on Friday. The protests were relatively small, and Khan vowed to move forward with the larger demonstration planned for November 2 despite the ban on public rallies. Credit: Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
