Detroit Teachers Call for Budget Audit Over Pay Issues

Hundreds of Detroit teachers on sick-out over pay issues marched around the public school’s administrative building on Monday, May 2. Nearly all of Detroit’s schools were closed Monday because of the organized union action.

School district emergency manager Judge Steven Rhodes told the union over the weekend that if state lawmakers do not pass funding, the district would not be able to pay the teachers after June 30. Summer school and extended special education services would also be canceled if the funding is not approved.

Teachers called for a financial audit of the school district, questioning where the money went. They also carried signs and chanted, “no pay, no work.”

Rhodes held a press conference on Monday, urging lawmakers to pass the funding promptly. Additionally, he called on teachers, students and parents to put pressure on state officials to pass the funding. Credit: Instagram/nathandetroit_draws
