Flooding Makes Roads Impassable in Columbia, South Carolina

A stalled storm system over the southeast generated further drenching rain across South Carolina on Sunday, October 4, triggering more widespread flooding. Small dams burst in the Columbia area, according to local media, with as much as another 15 inches of precipitation expected in the area of the state.

Numerous roads had been closed due to flooding, and authorities are asking people to stay home.

The system already had brought significant flooding to the Charleston area and along the coast. On Sunday, US President Barack Obama issued a state of emergency, following a request by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, that will allow federal money to be used to help with the recovery from the storm.
