Ghanaian Voters Form Long Lines in Hotly-Contested General Election

Long lines formed in Accra on December 7 as voters turned out for Ghana’s general election.

President John Mahama, dubbed “Obama Mahama” during his election fours ago, was running for his second and final term, but was being challenged by opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo amid a faltering economy.

Prior to the vote, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NCP) had been accused by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of voter intimidation. Akufo-Addo also questioned the independence of the country’s electoral commission and the neutrality of the police force, according to the Wall Street Journal. Mahama on December 5 said the opposition was deliberately undermining confidence among voters in the election results, and said Akufo-Addo was failing to promote peace and a lack of violence, VOA reported.
