Italian Navy Recovers Wreck of Migrant Boat Off Sicily

The Italian Navy on Wednesday, June 29, announced the recovery of a migrant ship that sank near Sicily in April 2015. The Navy raised the boat from more than 1,000 feet under the water and kept the wreck in a refrigerated transport structure to facilitate the identification of victims. There were 28 survivors among the 700-800 migrants aboard the ship, which capsized after colliding with a civilian freighter that had come its aid.

The incident is described as one of the “most deadly accidents at sea” in the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. Credit: Marine Militare
