Jacksonville Sheriff Officer Arrested, Fired for Punching Woman in Handcuffs

An officer with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office was arrested and fired on Thursday, April 29, after he struck a woman who was in handcuffs. Akinyemi Borisade, 26, was charged with battery. He was a probationary officer and had been with the department for one year.

The sheriff’s office released a video of the incident, which took place on Wednesday, at the Duval County Jail. In the video, the victim, identified as Mayra Alejandra Martinez, is seen in handcuffs before Borisade pushes her against the wall. She attempts to kick the officer before he strikes her three times. A second officer intervenes as Borisade holds Martinez over a garbage can. Martinez slumps to the ground after the two officers walk away.

Martinez, 31, was arrested at Scores Gentlemen’s Club after a dispute with employees at the venue. She was asked to leave and then arrested for trespassing and resisting arrest. A Times-Union report stated Borisade had punched Martinez during her arrest. Credit: YouTube/Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office
