Manam Volcano Erupts in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea’s Manam volcano erupted on Friday, July 31, sending ash hundreds of thousands of feet into air in “all directions,” according to a Australian Bureau of Meteorology report.

The report says that volcanic ash was blasted 19,812 meters (65,000 feet) into the air on Friday morning as a result of the eruption. The Manam eruption is its first in almost 11 years.

After the 2004 eruption, the island was evacuated and its residents resettled elsewhere in Papua New Guinea. Credit: Regional and Mesoscale Meteorology Branch
