Mayor Calls for New Elections as Protests Continue for a Seventh Night in Tucuman

Around 7,000 protesters gathered in Tucuman, Argentina, on August 30, the seventh consecutive day of protests over alleged election fraud in the northwestern province, according to local reports.

The protests began the previous Sunday and turned violent when police used rubber bullets and tear gas to clear the demonstrations after protesters tried to break down gates around the regional government building on Monday. Many of the demonstrators were also protesting against the police crackdown.

On Sunday, the mayor of San Miguel de Tucumán, Domingo Amaya, called for new elections, describing adulteration of the electoral roll as well as the burning of ballot boxes, according to the Buenos Aires Herald. Credit: YouTube/joaco galt
