Mulcair Takes Aim at Harper, Conservatives, in Campaign Launch Speech

Canada’s New Democrats Leader Tom Mulcair launched his party’s official federal campaign on August 2. Prime Minister Stephen Harper earlier in the day asked for the 41st Parliament to be dissolved and the official federal campaign season to begin. The election will be held on October 19.

Mulcair took aim at Harper, who has been prime minister since 2006, in his speech announcing the beginning of the NDP campaign. He said, among other things, that the Canadian economy has shrunk in each of the last five months. Some claim Canada is already in a recession, he said.

Harper pledged that the NDP will help grow jobs and the economy, helping the middle class.
