Obama Congratulates US Women's Soccer Team on World Cup Triumph

President Barack Obama congratulated Team USA by phone, after they defeated Japan 5-2 to become the FIFA Women’s World Cup champions on Sunday, July 5, in Vancouver, Canada.

New Jersey native and USA captain Carli Lloyd scored a hat trick in the first 16 minutes of the match.

Offering an invitation to the White House, Obama said, “You guys just made a whole lot of new fans, and more importantly, inspired a whole new generation of young women to make sure women’s soccer continues to grow.” Credit: The White House
