Protesters March Against Racial Injustice for Fifth Day in El Cajon

Protesters marched through downtown El Cajon, California, on Saturday, October 1, the fifth day of demonstrations since the shooting of an unarmed black man earlier in the week. Police released two videos — taken from a surveillance camera and a witness — on Friday from the shooting of Alfred Olango. Saturday’s protest started with a prayer service before the group marched to police headquarters.

The incident on Tuesday started when Olango’s family called 911 for assistance, saying he wasn’t acting like himself. There also were reports he was getting into traffic. Police said Olango pointed a vaping device at officers, which appeared to look like a gun; two officers opened fire. The device was shown during Friday’s press conference when the video was shown.

Protests have formed each day since the shooting, at times getting violent and sparking arrests. Credit: Instagram/Celia Jimenez, City Times
