Spanish Civil Guard Rescues 276 Migrants Drifting in Italian Waters

Spain’s Guardia Civil (Civil Guard) shared video on May 25 showing the rescue of 276 people aboard a fishing vessel drifting in Italian waters, and said that without assistance the boat would have sunk.

The rescue was said to have been carried out by the Rio Segura ship, and the passengers on the fishing boat included 102, men, 28 women, and 146 children. The Civil Guard said the Italian Coast Guard had initially spotted the boat 170 miles south of Italy in rough seas. The crew of the Rio Segura evacuated the migrants from the boat and transported them to the town of Taranto, on the south coast of Italy. Credit: YouTube/Guardia Civil
