Symbolic Building in Amatrice Collapses Following New Earthquake

After standing tall among the ruins after earthquakes struck the Italian town in August, Amatrice’s so-called “Red Mansion” collapsed following a series of new earthquakes in the region on Wednesday night into Thursday, October 27. The four-story building had become a symbol of hope for residents in the wake of the disastrous quakes.

A 5.5-magnitude quake hit an area southeast of Sellano, in Perugia province, at around 5:10 pm and around two hours later, a separate 6.1-magnitude tremor was recorded west of Visso, Macerata province, according to USGS. Both areas experienced strong aftershocks following the initial quake.
