Tensions on Rise in Baltimore After Police Arrest

Tensions between Baltimore residents and police rose on May 4 after a man was arrested. The were reports that a shooting took place during the arrests at the corner of Pennsylvania and North avenues, which is the center of the neighborhood where recent protests and unrest has taken place. Baltimore Police say they fired no shots during the arrest.

Baltimore police, said no one was shot and a suspect was arrested for carrying a handgun. The reports of a police shooting were not true, police tweeted. Reporters at the scene stated someone was put in an ambulance.

The shooting comes after a weekend of peaceful protests, rallies and prayer services in Baltimore after six police officers were charged in connection with the death of Freddie Gray. Gray suffered a critical spinal injury while in police custody on April 12. He died a week later, sparking protests.

The protests turned to unrest on April 27, and officials instituted a city-wide curfew and mobilized the Maryland National Guard. The curfew was lifted on May 3, and the guard has been drawing down its operations in the city. Credit: Instagram/Shervin Bahadori
