Thousands Gather for Pro-Europe Rally in Athens

Thousands of people gathered in Athens’ Syntagma Square for a pro-Europe rally just hours before Greece defaulted on its loans to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The demonstration was organized by supporters of a ‘Yes’ campaign for the July 5 referendum on a new bailout deal and economic reforms package brokered with Greece’s creditors.

Greece missed its deadline to repay a €1.6 billion loan to the IMF on Tuesday, in the first default for a developed country, according to Reuters.

The ‘No’ campaign had staged a rally outside Greek Parliament in Syntagma Square on Monday evening. This video shows crowds of protesters in Syntagma Square. Credit: Instagram/andreahalpina
