'Vigil': The six burning questions we need answered after episode 3
It’s already one of the most talked about TV shows of the year – but BBC submarine thriller series Vigil keeps getting more and more exciting.
The story of a police investigation into the death of a submarine sailor has expanded to include conspiracy, cover ups, shady politicians, drugs, and enemies lurking in the unlikeliest of shadows.
The show with the all-star cast led by Suranne Jones, Rose Leslie, Shaun Evans and Daniel Portman has had the whole country talking, with the HMS Vigil now boasting as as many suspects and shaders as high megaton nuclear warheads.
After the third instalment of its six episode run, here are the six big questions viewers want to know the answers to?
BEWARE: SPOILERS for Vigil episodes 1-3.
Is Shaun Evans’s CPO Glover the killer, or just a cheater?
After DCI Silva (Suranne Jones) suddenly discovered that he was the married crewman having an affair with boat medic Dr Docherty, the policewoman's whole world seemed shaken. Her onboard ally and guide has been lying to her all along and clearly has a darker side. But how dark?

Did he kill Martin Compston’s Burke to stop his blackmail plan over the affair, or is he part of the bigger cover up hinted at? Or is he just a well tattooed red herring?
Who killed peace camp protestor Jade?
Burke’s secret girlfriend was at the centre of the plot, and complained of being spied on by MI5 undercover agents.
She’s also the daughter of an anti-nuke local MP. Was she killed by authorities in a cover up? Or are the MP and his slimy looking aide up to good here?
Did Dr Tiffany Docherty fake the drugs tests under orders from the commander?
The HMS Vigil's medic has claimed she cheated her crewmen’s drug tests following a massive drunked and reportedly drugged up brawl during shore leave in Florida 18 months earlier, which led to two accidental deaths. But was she under orders from the captain, or higher ups, to avoid further scandal?
What secret does Daniel Portman’s Walsh have on the commander?
Just before his drunken suicide attempt, sailor Gary Walsh mentioned to the commander that he had done his duty and hinted at a revelation, when he is met with, ‘Are you threatening me?' Is the commander covering up the accidental deaths in Florida, or does he know more about the new spate of deaths?
Why is the US Navy tailing a British sub?
The shock discovery that the Vigil’s shadow was actually a Los Angeles-class vessel from the USA, and not the Russians as suspected, changes the whole dimension of the crisis.
Would the US Navy really be tracking a submarine over a boozed up night in Florida? Or is there more to this unusual military action among firm allies?
Why are the ‘MI5’ officers chasing Rose Leslie?
The episode concluded with a mystery car chasing Leslie’s detective Longacre through Glasgow, and ended in a confrontation with MI5 officers who'd earlier been debriefing her Police Scotland boss. What do the spies want with her? And are they really who they say they are?
