BESUT: A suspect wanted in a robbery case in Kampung Gong Surau, Kuala Besut on March 20, was apprehended by villagers while he was loitering around Kampung Gong Surau, near here, last Thursday.

The suspect, who tried to escape, was caught by villagers. They took the chance to beat up the suspect before handing him over to the police.

District police chief Superintendent Mohd Zamri Mohd Rowi said the 27-year-old suspect from Kampung Gong Manok was then sent to the Besut Hospital for treatment.

“He is being warded for further treatment,” he said, adding that the suspect has since been referred to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ).

“The suspect sustained fractures on his back and cuts on his head,” he said.

The suspect who possessed a previous criminal record is in stable condition at the HSNZ.

Zamri said the villagers should not have taken the law into their own hands and let the police do their work.

It was learnt that the suspect, was among four men who robbed an elderly woman at her house in Kampung Gong Surau.

The victim had then lodged a report at tmpung Raja police station and a manhunt was launched to track down the suspects.

He said two days later, two suspects were nabbed by the police to assist with investigations under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for armed gang robbery.

“On the following day, the third suspect, surrendered himself at the Kampung Raja police station to assist with the case,” he added.
