Sure, you could play solitaire on your phone and start another rotation through every single-player game—or you could enlist your friends and family for a virtual game night. The latter seems much more entertaining, if you ask me.
As the host, you should definitely cater the games you play to your crowd. Luckily, we’ve laid out the best games to play, from the tech-savvy to the bare-minimum basics. Whether you’re playing with the whole fam or your ride-or-die group of friends, you’ll know what games to choose. May the odds be ever in your favor!
For the tech-savvy bunch:
Heads Up! on Houseparty
Ellen Degeneres’s popular Heads Up! game, which involves one player guessing a word that only the other players can see, is now available on the video-chat app Houseparty. Who doesn’t love a good guessing game? Bonus: It’s free.
Mario Kart Tour
Technically, you don’t need to see your friends’ faces for this nostalgic multiplayer game. As you take on courses inspired by real cities all over the globe, you can race against up to seven other players. This one will surely satisfy a bit of your wanderlust. And if you want to smack-talk chat while you’re playing, you can always fire up Zoom or FaceTime.
Words with Friends
This word game had a huge moment a few years ago. Let’s get back into it, shall we? It’s only a two-player game, but that makes it the perfect one to challenge your parents to. Who needs Scrabble when you have this, which definitely won’t accept any sort-of-maybe words that are likely not recognized by the dictionary.

I’m highly convinced that it’s impossible to play this epic game without laughing. On PlayingCards.io, you can play Cards Against Humanity just as you would offline. It’s another option you can engage with on a truly virtual level, without having to actually speak words to your friends. But a video call would make it waaaay better. You might want to put one trustworthy person in charge of keeping score. How will you choose the words over video chat? There are no losers in this game, and it can be tailored to all ages. Would you rather drink Coke or Pepsi? Would you rather fly or be invisible? Would you rather lose your car or all of the pictures you’ve ever taken? It’ll surely spark some debates, and you can get creative with it.
