VW Passat redesign is coming for 2019, alongside a new SUV

The 2018 Chicago Auto Show brought us the North American reveal of the 2019 Volkswagen Arteon. After the reveal, Hinrich Woebcken, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America's North American Region, spoke to a roundtable of journalists about the German automaker's near future, including the next-generation Volkswagen Passat in 2019. Expect to see it alongside a new SUV as part of VW's plan to bring two new cars to the market every year.

Details were vague, but expect the already sizable Passat to grow in size in an effort to differentiate itself from the new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. That car grew immensely, especially when it comes to interior volume. The styling should fall in line with the rest of VW's lineup, too. Look for sharp, clean lines, a wide grille and LED lighting.

Woebcken did say that the Passat will continue to be built in Volkswagen's Chattanooga, good news for those Tennessee workers. In addition to the Passat, Volkswagen has plans to expand its SUV lineup with another Atlas-sized crossover. While this could be a stylish model similar to the Arteon/Passat relationship, the far more likely outcome is a two-row Atlas variant.
