Walmart announced today that it will be rolling out new store designs this year that have a "completely new look and feel" and that are "focusing on a digitally enabled shopping experience."

In a release about the new store designs, Walmart said that it was inspired by airports to guide customers more easily and quickly around the store, which will come in handy when it comes to social distancing. These stores will have updated signage to reflect the design of the Walmart app and will encourage customers to download the app to use throughout the store. Sections of the store will be marked with big and bold letters to indicate what types of items you can find there, and aisles will also be marked with letter and number combinations you can use in the app. All the stores will also feature a clean and sleek design as you can see in the photos.

The theme of these new store designs seems to be going more high-tech, as they will have self-checkout kiosks, contactless payment solutions like Walmart Pay, and in some locations, will also have Scan & Go, all of which are aiming to cut down contact between store workers and customers.

Though many of these innovations seem inspired by the way customers have started shopping during COVID-19, Walmart had already been testing this new concept in select stores. They expect to have this new design concept implemented into nearly 200 Supercenters as well as in select Health Centers and Neighborhood Markets by the end of this fiscal year, and hope to get close to 1,000 stores by next fiscal year.
