Watch: first trailer for 'Red Dead Redemption 2,' a Wild West game from the 'GTA' studio

Seven characters feature in "Red Dead Redemption 2" images, but who are they?

A one-minute teaser for "Red Dead Redemption 2" provides a taste of what's to come in the Fall 2017 release from "Grand Theft Auto" studio Rockstar Games.

There's precious little about whatever mystery drives the "Red Dead Redemption 2" storyline, but enough to start up a wealth of speculation over the Wild West-set action adventure.

Instead, the teaser's main focus was on realistic graphics, an evocative soundtrack, and environmental details, with the barest nod towards a "Red Dead Redemption 2" storyline.

Presenting an exquisite, believable world is the first step for Rockstar Games. Encouraging viewers to imagine themselves within it, the next.

The global studio network is well known for creating the "Grand Theft Auto" franchise, technically innovative, highly cinematic, always satirical and often times nihilistic in its study of modern life and its various power-fantasies -- criminal or otherwise.

On its face, the narrative details surrounding "Red Dead Redemption 2" are not much clearer after its debut trailer was released on October 20 than they were before.

"When the time comes," an unknown narrator intones, "you got to run and don't look back. This is over."

Bison and cows roam, horses whinny, and a dog barks at domesticated fowl, pecking at entrails.

Environments range from open plains to forest-filled valleys, misty lakes, muddy streets and sun-kissed farms, each scene accompanied by carefully-laid sound effects.

A waterborne canoe hints towards alternative forms of transport for the wandering cowboy, and a horse carrying a fallen deer implies hunting pursuits will be made available within the game.

Just as a seven-strong posse was seen on initial teaser images released earlier in the week, a seven-strong posse of armed horsemen gallops over dry grasslands towards sandstone and snowy mountain wilderness.

But the riders are masked, making specific identification less than straightforward, bait for invested fans of 2010's "Red Dead Redemption" and its 2004 predecessor, "Red Dead Revolver."

For many fans, it's the start of what could prove to be an excruciating drip-feed of information from the ever-canny Rockstar, which opened pre-orders for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions of game as its preview trailer went live.
