Watch: This incredible video of what Mumbai looks like without its people
Mumbai-based photographer and drone pilot Shreepad Gaonkar didn’t step out of his home to shoot this stunning video.
A breath-taking view of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link Road, a top shot of the Hiranandani skyscrapers in Powai, a panorama of the sea behind the Gateway of India dotted with private yachts and cruise ships, all docked and waiting.
The camera glides over streets and slums, buildings, crossroads and empty railway tracks. And you’re struck by just what a city looks without its people. The video, shot by Shreepad Gaonkar, is a disturbing view of what so many of us cannot see – a city shorn of its life.
Interestingly enough, Gaonkar didn’t have to step out of his house to show us these haunting images at all. “I have been shooting videos for the last three years. I’ve shot for more than 100 projects which included sports and corporate events, music videos, cricket and football tournaments. During this time, if I’ve liked something I shot, I try to capture it on my camera or iPhone,” Gaonkar tells Yahoo in an interview.
Gaonkar completed his post-graduation in sports management some seven years ago and has work on IPL and ISL. He’s done everything from stadium operations and branding and runs a company called Pineal Entertainment Networks.
“Aside from sports, I also love capturing moments around me. I already had a management degree; I clubbed it with my camera skills and began offering photography and filmmaking as an add-on service,” he says.
Before long Gaonkar began getting more video projects than events and so he built a young team, started by teaching them handy tips about camera handling and management lessons.
The Mumbai video is a passion project. Gaonkar says that when the lockdown announcement was made, he thought it would be a good idea to put out a few videos on his YouTube. He says the idea was to spread positivity.
But since the lockdown was in place, he couldn’t step out of the house. With nowhere to go, he spent a day going through and compiling old footage, editing it, adding sound effects and a music track. The result is this stunning video.
